Do I have Anxiety or an Anxiety Disorder?

In every instance of questions about symptoms of anxiety versus an anxiety disorder, what it's important for women to understand is that there IS a difference. Just because you are experiencing symptoms of anxiety, that in and of itself does not denote that you have an anxiety disorder. So when we're delineating the difference, we must look at the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) because the DSM has very clear cut, specific criteria, and it says how many of those criteria that you must identify with in order to be diagnosed with a disorder versus a symptom.

Under the anxiety disorder classifications that there are several different types of anxiety disorder. The more common ones that we see and treat are either:

  • Panic Disorder, which is an anxiety disorder
  • Agoraphobia - where someone is afraid to leave their house
  • Unspecified Anxiety
It is important to recognize that under the single heading of anxiety disorder that there are several different types of anxiety disorder that you would delineate between, based on specific criteria.
